Caprine arthritis-encephalitis virus (CAEV) belongs to the genus Lentivirus within the family Retroviridae and is collectively grouped with the Maedi-visna virus (MVV) as small ruminant lentiviruses (SRLV). Infections primarily result in continuous and progressive pathological damage to the joints, mammary glands, and central nervous system of goats and sheep.
