Coccidioidomycosis, commonly referred to as "valley fever," is a fungal infection caused by the soil-dwelling fungi Coccidioides immitis or Coccidioides posadasii. This disease predominantly occurs in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, and can also be found in certain areas of Central and South America. The infection develops after inhaling fungal spores. Coccidioidomycosis has been reported in a number of animal species.
