Target Information
Johne's disease is a contagious ailment that impacts cattle, various ruminants, and non-ruminant wildlife across the globe. It is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP). This bacterium is an obligate intracellular pathogen that cannot replicate in the environment. The disease is especially significant in dairy herds due to its effects on animal health, the production losses it can cause, and its debated links to Crohn's disease. MAP is mainly spread through the oral intake of contaminated feces, colostrum, or milk from an infected animal.
