Escherichia coli, commonly known as E. coli, is a conditional pathogen capable of causing gastrointestinal or urinary tract infections in humans and a variety of animals when specific conditions arise. Typically, E. coli is a normal resident bacterium in the intestines of animals, with only a small fraction having the potential to cause disease under certain circumstances.
