The Schmallenberg orthobunyavirus, commonly known as Schmallenberg virus (SBV), is a pathogen responsible for congenital deformities and stillbirths in livestock such as cattle, sheep, goats, and possibly alpacas. It belongs to the Bunyavirales family, characterized by enveloped negative-sense single-stranded RNA viruses whose genome is segmented into three parts: Small (S), Medium (M), and Large (L).
