This disease is caused by the bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), which is classified under the genus Pestivirus within the family Flaviviridae. Pestiviruses are characterized as small, spherical, single-stranded RNA viruses, enveloped, with a diameter ranging from 40 to 60 nanometers.
