Target Information

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is a gram-positive, catalase-negative, rod-shaped bacterium that is non-spore-forming, nonacid-fast, and nonmotile. Found worldwide, E. rhusiopathiae is primarily an animal pathogen, responsible for the disease erysipelas, which can affect a broad spectrum of animals. Commonly impacted species include pigs, turkeys, and laying hens, although cases have also been reported in other mammals, birds, fish, and reptiles. In pigs, the disease is referred to as diamond skin disease. Additionally, the bacterium can lead to zoonotic infections in humans, known as erysipeloid.
