The Western equine encephalitis virus (WEEV) is an alphavirus belonging to the Togaviridae family, classified as a group IV positive-sense single-stranded RNA virus. This viral infection, known as Western Equine Encephalitis, is transmitted to humans and equines via the bite of a mosquito carrying the virus. WEEV shares a close relationship with Eastern Equine Encephalitis and Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis viruses.
