Target Information
Infectious salmon anemia (ISA) is a viral illness affecting Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and is caused by the Salmon isavirus. ISAV consists of segmented RNA and is the sole species within the genus Isavirus, which falls under the family Orthomyxoviridae, thus bearing relation to influenza viruses. ISA virus induces severe anemia in fish that contract the disease. Unlike mature red blood cells in mammals, those in fish contain DNA, making them susceptible to viral infections.
