Target Information

Klebsiella pneumoniae is a Gram-negative, non-motile, encapsulated, lactose-fermenting bacterium with a rod shape. Although it is part of the normal flora in the mouth, skin, and intestines, if aspirated, it can cause significant damage to the alveoli in human and animal lungs, leading to the production of bloody, brownish, or yellowish jelly-like sputum. Klebsiella species, especially K. pneumoniae, are notable opportunistic pathogens associated with complex clinical infections in both humans and animals. Domestic animals might serve as a reservoir for pathogenic and multidrug-resistant Klebsiella species that can affect humans.

Target Synonym Klebsiella pneumoniae; Bacillus pneumoniae; Hyalococcus pneumoniae
