Fumonisins are a group of mycotoxins primarily produced by Fusarium moniliforme, a fungal strain commonly found in corn crops worldwide. F. moniliforme cultures have been shown to be hepatocarcinogenic in rats and are the cause of equine leukoencephalomalacia (ELEM) and acute porcine pulmonary edema (PPE).
