Equine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1) is a member of the family Herpesviridae, specifically within the subfamily Alphaherpesvirinae. It is a significant pathogen affecting equine species, including horses, ponies, and donkeys. EHV-1 can cause a range of clinical signs, from mild respiratory infections to severe neurological disorders. Common symptoms include fever, nasal discharge, coughing, and in some cases, abortion in pregnant mares or neonatal foals.
