Target Information
Plasmodium falciparum histidine rich protein 2 (HRPII) is a significant antigen produced by the Plasmodium falciparum parasite, the causative agent of malaria in humans. This protein is released by infected red blood cells and is detectable in the plasma of infected individuals, making it a key target for rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) used for malaria detection. HRPII is encoded by the pfhrp2 gene, which is subject to genetic variation and deletions that can affect the accuracy of RDTs. Some P. falciparum strains have been found to lack the pfhrp2 gene, leading to false-negative RDT results and posing a significant challenge to malaria control efforts. These deletions can occur in areas where the distribution of allelic variants is skewed, potentially due to the presence of isolated parasite populations or in regions with very low transmission .
