Target Information
Pyruvate dehydrogenase E1 (PDH-E1) is a key component of the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDC), which is a mitochondrial enzyme complex that plays a crucial role in cellular metabolism. PDH-E1 catalyzes the conversion of pyruvate, derived from glucose, into acetyl-CoA, a central molecule in the citric acid cycle (also known as the Krebs cycle or TCA cycle). This conversion is essential for aerobic respiration, as acetyl-CoA enters the citric acid cycle and is subsequently oxidized to produce ATP, the cell's primary energy currency. PDH-E1's activity is tightly regulated, responding to cellular energy needs and the availability of substrates, ensuring that glucose-derived carbon is efficiently channeled into energy production when required.
