Target Information
Canine cytokeratin 18 (CK18) is a structural protein found in epithelial cells, particularly in the gastrointestinal tract, liver, lungs, kidneys, pancreas, and mammary glands. It is a member of the cytokeratin family and plays a role in maintaining the structural integrity and scaffolding of cells. During apoptosis, CK18 is cleaved by caspases, releasing fragments into the bloodstream, which can be detected as a biomarker for epithelial cell damage. In veterinary medicine, CK18 has been investigated as a non-invasive biomarker for gastrointestinal toxicity in dogs receiving chemotherapy, although its clinical utility in this context has been found to be limited.
