Target Information
Canine cytokeratin 8 (CK8) is a type II keratin that pairs with cytokeratin 18 to form intermediate filaments in simple epithelial cells and many epithelial-derived cancers. It plays a critical role in maintaining cellular structural integrity and is involved in signal transduction and cellular differentiation. CK8 is also important for linking the contractile apparatus to dystrophin at the costameres of striated muscle. In veterinary medicine, CK8 can be used as a diagnostic marker for certain tumors due to changes in cytokeratin expression as a result of tumorigenesis. Its expression patterns are valuable for comparative histology and for investigating similarities and differences in cytokeratin expression between normal and neoplastic epithelia in dogs.
