Target Information
Bovine annexin A4 is a calcium-dependent, membrane-binding protein that has been shown to play a role in restoring cytokinesis in bacteria, particularly when this process is inhibited by beta-lactam antibiotics such as ampicillin, piperacillin, and cephalexin. This novel activity of Annexin A4 is crucial as it can reverse the inhibitory effects on cytokinesis, which is the final step in cell division. The mechanism of action of Annexin A4 depends on calcium binding, and its binding to membranes is essential for restoring cytokinesis. The filamentous form of bacteria, which is more resistant to phagocytosis by immune cells, can be reduced by the expression of Annexin A4, potentially enhancing the efficacy of antibiotic chemotherapy.
