Target Information

Canine glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) is a type III intermediate filament structural protein predominantly found in astrocytes, which are essential for maintaining the cytoskeleton assembly and integrity of these star-shaped glial cells. GFAP is neuroprotective, and its expression is increased in response to neuronal stress or injury, indicating astrocyte activation. In dogs, GFAP has been identified as a biomarker for certain central nervous system (CNS) disorders, particularly necrotizing meningoencephalitis (NME) in Pug dogs, where elevated serum GFAP concentrations have been observed. GFAP's role in astrocyte function and its response to CNS pathology make it a significant target for diagnostic and therapeutic interventions in canine neurological health.
