Target Information
Canine glutamate decarboxylase 67 (GAD67) is a key enzyme in the brain that catalyzes the synthesis of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter. This enzyme plays a crucial role in maintaining neural inhibition and is implicated in neuronal development, as its activity is detectable in the embryonic stage and precedes the formation of GABAergic synapses. GAD67 is one of the two main isoforms of GAD, with the other being GAD65, and they are encoded by GAD1 and GAD2 genes respectively. In dogs, GAD67 may be associated with temperament and behavior, as genetic polymorphisms in the GAD genes have been studied for their potential influence on these traits. The enzyme's function is not only limited to the brain but also extends to other areas such as the pancreatic islets, where it contributes to insulin secretion and glucose homeostasis.
