Target Information
LSD1, or lysine-specific demethylase 1A, is an enzyme with a unique function in the regulation of gene expression through its demethylase activity. It is primarily known for its ability to remove methyl groups from mono- and dimethylated lysine 4 on histone H3 (H3K4me1/2), a modification associated with active gene transcription. LSD1's action counterbalances the methylation marks added by histone methyltransferases, thus playing a critical role in the dynamic regulation of chromatin structure. Its demethylase activity is not limited to histones; LSD1 can also demethylate non-histone proteins, including the tumor suppressor p53, further emphasizing its broad impact on cellular processes.
