Target Information
Cytochrome c oxidase subunit 4 (COX4), also known as a component of the mitochondrial respiratory chain, plays a pivotal role in the electron transport system. As the final enzyme in the chain, it catalyzes the reduction of molecular oxygen to water, coupling this reaction with the translocation of protons across the mitochondrial inner membrane to generate ATP. COX4 is encoded by nuclear DNA and is one of the essential subunits that, along with those encoded by mitochondrial DNA, form the functional cytochrome c oxidase complex. Research indicates that COX4's expression and activity are linked to various physiological and pathological conditions, including energy metabolism and certain diseases. Targeting COX4 has potential therapeutic implications in conditions where mitochondrial function is compromised.
