Target Information

Canine ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) is a rate-limiting enzyme in the polyamine biosynthetic pathway, responsible for converting ornithine to putrescine, which initiates the synthesis of other polyamines critical for cell proliferation, cell-cell interaction, and cell cycle regulation. This enzyme plays diverse biological roles, including cell motility, stabilization of nucleic acids or membranes, regulation of ion channels and receptors, and affecting chromatin structure. In dogs, ODC is speculated to play a key role in several cancerous conditions, with ODC activity and polyamine levels increasing during specific phases in cancer cell lines compared to normal cells. As a therapeutic target, inhibiting ODC activity can help combat tumor growth, making it a significant target in canine oncology.
