Target Information
Bovine osteocalcin, also known as bone gamma-carboxyglutamate (Gla) protein, is a non-collagenous protein synthesized primarily by osteoblasts and constitutes 1-2% of total bone protein. It is a key component in bone metabolism, playing a crucial role in bone formation, resorption, and mineralization. Osteocalcin binds strongly to hydroxyapatite crystals in the bone matrix through its gamma-carboxyglutamate residues, which are formed via a vitamin K-dependent carboxylation process. This binding enhances the protein's affinity for calcium ions, facilitating its role in bone mineralization.
