Target Information
Porcine arachidonate 5-lipoxygenase (ALOX5) is a key enzyme in the pig involved in the metabolism of arachidonic acid, a polyunsaturated fatty acid that plays a significant role in the production of inflammatory mediators. ALOX5 catalyzes the conversion of arachidonic acid to leukotriene A4 (LTA4), which is a precursor for the synthesis of various leukotrienes, including leukotriene B4 (LTB4), a potent pro-inflammatory molecule, and cysteinyl leukotrienes, which are involved in allergic reactions and asthma. This enzyme is highly expressed in leukocytes, particularly in neutrophils and macrophages, where it contributes to the immune response and inflammation. ALOX5 is a target of interest for research into the pathogenesis of inflammatory diseases, as its inhibition can reduce the production of pro-inflammatory leukotrienes, thereby potentially alleviating disease symptoms.
