Target Information
Porcine BCL-2, or B-cell lymphoma 2, is a protein expressed in various tissues of pigs, including immune cells. It is a key regulator of the mitochondrial pathway of apoptosis, the programmed cell death mechanism. BCL-2 family proteins are critical in maintaining a balance between cell survival and death. The BCL-2 protein itself has an anti-apoptotic function, meaning it helps prevent cells from undergoing apoptosis under normal conditions. It does so by inhibiting the release of cytochrome c from mitochondria, which is a step in the initiation of the apoptotic cascade. Overexpression of BCL-2 has been associated with resistance to apoptosis and is commonly found in various types of cancer. In pigs, BCL-2's role in disease resistance and health maintenance is significant, as it can influence the cell's response to pathogens and other stressors.
