Target Information

Porcine MKS transition zone complex subunit 1 (MKS1) is a crucial component of the MKS transition zone complex, which is involved in the regulation of ciliary trafficking and the maintenance of ciliary structure. This protein plays a significant role in the development and function of cilia, which are hair-like projections from the cell surface that are essential for various cellular processes, including sensing the environment and cellular signaling.Mutations in MKS1 have been associated with ciliopathies, a group of human genetic disorders that affect the structure and function of cilia. These disorders can lead to a wide range of symptoms, including neurological defects, kidney diseases, and retinal degeneration. The MKS1 protein is also genetically linked with the BBSome complex, which is involved in the biogenesis and function of cilia. The BBSome and MKS1 genetically interact to maintain cilia homeostasis, and mutations in either complex can modify the phenotypic consequences of each other, leading to a broad spectrum of clinical presentations in patients with ciliopathies.
