Target Information
Porcine peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1 alpha (PGC1α) is a transcriptional coactivator that plays a pivotal role in regulating energy metabolism, particularly in tissues with high energy demands such as skeletal muscle, heart, and liver. PGC1α is known to promote mitochondrial biogenesis, enhance fatty acid oxidation, and improve insulin sensitivity. In pigs, PGC1α has been studied for its potential to influence muscle fiber type conversion. Overexpression of PGC1α in skeletal muscle has been shown to induce a fiber-type switch from glycolytic to oxidative, which can lead to improved meat quality in pigs. This is achieved by increasing the expression of oxidative fiber markers and enzymes involved in the TCA cycle and oxidative phosphorylation.
