Target Information
Porcine retinol binding protein 5 (RBP5) is a protein that plays a crucial role in the transport of retinol, a form of vitamin A, in pigs. RBP5 is involved in various physiological processes, including vision, growth, reproduction, cell differentiation, and embryonic development. The gene for RBP5 has been mapped to porcine chromosome 5 and has been studied for its tissue distribution and polymorphism. This protein is highly expressed in the liver and is also found in other tissues such as the lungs, skeletal muscle, spleen, heart, stomach, large intestine, lymph nodes, small intestine, brain, kidney, and fat. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within the RBP5 gene have been identified, and some of these SNPs have been associated with economic traits in pigs, making them potential genetic markers for porcine production.
