Target Information

Chicken yolk immunoglobulin, specifically Immunoglobulin Y (IgY), is the major antibody in chickens and is functionally equivalent to mammalian IgG. IgY is produced by hens and transferred from the serum to the egg yolk, where it accumulates, providing offspring with humoral immunity against common avian pathogens until their own immune systems mature. This antibody exhibits unique structural and functional characteristics, distinguishing it from mammalian IgG, and has a molecular weight of approximately 180kDa. IgY antibodies have been recognized for their potential use in immunodiagnostic and immunotherapeutic applications due to their distinct properties, such as not binding to Fc receptors on cell surfaces, which results in different immunological responses compared to IgG.
