Target Information
Diarrheic shellfish poisoning (DSP) is one of the four known types of shellfish poisoning, primarily presenting as diarrhea. It can also cause abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. The toxins responsible, Okadaic Acid (OA) and its analogs (DTX-1, DTX-2, and DTX-3), are acid polyethers that bind to the receptor site of serine/threonine protein phosphatases, inhibiting their activity and leading to a rapid increase in phosphorylated proteins. These toxins are the sole components of the DSP complex that induce diarrheagenic effects in mammals.
