Target Information
The Shiga toxin (Stx) was initially identified in 1897. It is encoded within the genomes of bacteriophages, typically integrated as a prophage into the bacterial chromosome. Severe diseases are often associated with Stx2 toxins. Food plays a significant role in the transmission of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) through the fecal-oral route.
