Target Information
Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a mosquito-borne alphavirus that causes severe febrile illness and arthritis in humans. The E1 protein is a major component of the viral envelope and plays a central role in the virus's entry into host cells. This integral membrane protein is involved in the fusion of the viral envelope with the host cell membrane, enabling the release of the viral RNA into the cytoplasm. The E1 protein is a prime target for antiviral development due to its essential function in the viral life cycle. It is highly conserved among alphaviruses, making it a potential target for broad-spectrum antivirals. Inhibiting the E1 protein could prevent CHIKV from entering host cells, thereby curtailing the infection.
