Target Information
Borrelia burgdorferi OspA, or outer surface protein A, is a key lipoprotein on the surface of the bacterium that causes Lyme disease. OspA is predominantly expressed during the tick vector stage and is crucial for the bacterium's ability to bind to the tick's midgut and subsequently to the mammalian host's skin. This protein is considered a major virulence factor due to its role in the initial attachment of Borrelia burgdorferi to the host, facilitating the transmission of the bacterium from the tick during feeding. OspA's presence on the bacterial surface also helps it resist the host's immune response, contributing to the bacterium's survival and establishment within the host.
