Target Information
In felines, angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) is a key enzyme in the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system that regulates blood pressure by converting angiotensin II to the vasodilator angiotensin-(1-7). ACE2 is expressed in various tissues, including the heart, kidneys, and gut, where it protects the cardiovascular system and regulates amino acid transport. ACE2 also serves as the receptor for SARS coronaviruses, including SARS-CoV-2, facilitating viral entry into host cells. In cats, ACE2 expression levels may be associated with certain cardiovascular diseases, such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
