Trypanosoma cruzi is a species of parasitic euglenoids. Characteristically, trypanosomes invade the tissues of their host organisms and primarily feed on blood, though they also consume lymph. This behavior leads to diseases that vary depending on the host: in humans, it causes Chagas disease; in horses, it results in dourine and surra; and in cattle, it produces a disease similar to brucellosis.
