Target Information
Equine infectious anemia, also referred to as equine infectious anaemia or swamp fever by horse enthusiasts, is a disease affecting horses. It is caused by the Equine Infectious Anemia Virus, a type of retrovirus, and is spread via bloodsucking insects. Additionally, mares can pass the disease to their foals through the placenta. The likelihood of disease transmission is highest when an infected horse is symptomatic, as the virus concentration in the blood reaches its peak during illness.
