Escherichia coli O157:H7, commonly known as E. coli O157, is one of the many strains of the bacterium E. coli. While most E. coli strains are harmless and reside in the intestines of healthy humans and animals, the Shiga toxin-producing strain, E. coli O157, can lead to severe illness and even death.
