Giardiasis is a parasitic infection caused by the Giardia duodenalis organism, also known as G. lamblia or G. intestinalis. This disease typically spreads when Giardia duodenalis cysts present in feces contaminate food or water, which are then ingested. Transmission can also occur between humans and through contact with animals. The infection affects various animals, including beavers, other rodents, cows, and sheep, and animals are thought to contribute to the persistence of the infection in an environment.
