Target Information
Clostridium botulinum is a gram-positive, rod-shaped bacterium known for being anaerobic, spore-forming, and motile. It produces botulinum toxin, a potent neurotoxin. This bacterium is globally distributed, inhabiting the intestinal tracts of mammals and fish, as well as soil and sediment environments. Animals can get infected by consuming vegetation contaminated with the botulinum toxin, such as decaying hay or grain, or through direct contact with bacteria-laden soil. Botulinum toxin can cause botulism, a severe flaccid paralytic disease in humans and other animals.
