Salmonella is a genus of rod-shaped, gram-negative bacteria belonging to the Enterobacteriaceae family. This genus comprises two recognized species: Salmonella enterica and Salmonella bongori. These bacteria are commonly found in the digestive systems of humans and animals, particularly reptiles. Salmonella present on the skin of reptiles or amphibians can be transmitted to humans who handle them. Additionally, food and water can become contaminated by the bacteria through contact with the feces of infected individuals or animals.
