Histoplasma capsulatum is present in bird and bat guano, as well as in soil contaminated with these droppings. The variety Histoplasma capsulatum var. capsulatum exhibits mycelial growth in soil and in culture at room temperature. In tissues and cultures at 37°C, the organism grows in a yeast form.
