Target Information
Hepatozoon canis is a common protozoan transmitted by ticks and affects dogs. Unlike other protozoa transmitted by ticks, H. canis targets leukocytes and parenchymal tissues and is passed to dogs through the consumption of ticks with mature oocysts. Diagnosing an H. canis infection typically involves examining blood or buffy coat smears through cytology, but this approach may lack sensitivity.
