Target Information
Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), a member of the Pestivirus genus within the Flaviviridae family, is a significant pathogen in cattle that causes a range of clinical syndromes, including acute diarrhea, mucosal disease, and persistent infections leading to immunosuppression. BVDV targets primarily the epithelial cells of the gastrointestinal tract, but it can also infect lymphocytes, impairing the immune response of the host. The virus is characterized by the presence of two biotypes: noncytopathic (NCP) and cytopathic (CP). NCP BVDV can establish persistent infections in the bovine population, while CP BVDV is typically associated with more severe clinical disease.
