Target Information

Borrelia burgdorferi OspB, or outer surface protein B, is a lipoprotein that plays a critical role in the bacterium's adherence and survival within Ixodes ticks, which are the vectors for Lyme disease transmission. OspB is expressed during the tick phase of the bacterium's life cycle and is essential for its ability to colonize the tick gut. This protein is implicated in the bacterium's evasion of the host's immune system and contributes to its infectivity. Studies have shown that OspB antibodies can prevent B. burgdorferi colonization of Ixodes scapularis, indicating its importance in the bacterium's interaction with the tick vector.
