Target Information

Chicken IgM μ chain is a fundamental component of the avian immune system, playing a critical role in the primary immune response. It is a pentameric structure composed of five μ heavy chains and one light chain, along with a joining (J) chain. The μ heavy chain itself is made up of a variable region and several constant domains, which are essential for the antibody's effector functions. In chickens, IgM is the predominant antibody and is found in both serum and egg yolk, providing a natural form of immunity to offspring . The μ chain of chicken IgM is crucial for the development of B cells and the production of antigen-specific antibodies. Interestingly, even in the absence of light chains, as seen in genetically modified chickens, a functional form of IgM can be produced, indicating the plasticity of the immune system.
