Target Information

Bovine haptoglobin is a major acute phase protein in cattle, primarily synthesized in the liver, which plays a crucial role in binding free hemoglobin in the blood. This function helps prevent oxidative tissue damage and conserve iron by returning the heme residue to the host's metabolic process. Haptoglobin also decreases the risk of free hemoglobin being utilized for bacterial pathogen growth. It has been used as a marker for various diseases in cattle, including mastitis and fatty liver syndrome, and is a valuable biomarker for infection, inflammation, and trauma.
