Target Information
Canine lactoferrin is a multifunctional glycoprotein belonging to the transferrin family, widely recognized for its role in immune defense and antimicrobial activity. It is an iron-binding protein found in various exocrine secretions, including milk, saliva, and tears, as well as in neutrophils and mucosal surfaces. Lactoferrin plays a crucial role in the non-specific antimicrobial defense system by limiting the availability of iron to pathogens and disrupting bacterial membranes. Additionally, it has immunomodulatory properties, enhancing neutrophil functions and supporting overall immune health. In dogs, lactoferrin is also expressed in the uterus, where its levels may vary during the estrous cycle and in conditions like pyometra.
