Pneumocystis carinii (now classified as Pneumocystis jirovecii) is a fungal species that can cause a severe lung infection, especially in individuals with weakened immune systems. Pneumocystis jirovecii is an atypical fungus that lacks a true cell wall and cannot be easily cultured in standard laboratory media. The exact mode of transmission of Pneumocystis jirovecii is not fully understood, but it is believed to occur through airborne spread. Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) is the most common manifestation of Pneumocystis jirovecii infection. It often presents with progressive shortness of breath, dry cough, and fever.
