Target Information
Porcine glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) is an intermediate filament protein that is predominantly expressed in the central nervous system of pigs, particularly within astrocytes. GFAP serves as a structural protein, providing mechanical support to the cells and helping to maintain the integrity of the nervous tissue. It is instrumental in the response to various forms of neuronal injury, including inflammation, trauma, and ischemia. The expression of GFAP is typically low under normal physiological conditions but can be significantly upregulated in response to injury or disease, making it a biomarker for astrogliosis, a process characterized by the reactive proliferation of astrocytes. This upregulation is part of the astrocytic response to injury, which includes increased synthesis of intermediate filaments to provide a scaffold for cellular repair mechanisms.
