Target Information
Porcine aldehyde dehydrogenase 5 family member A1 (pALDH5A1), also known as succinate semialdehyde dehydrogenase (SSADH) or ALDH-5, is an enzyme that plays a critical role in the metabolism of the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in pigs. pALDH5A1 is involved in the conversion of succinate semialdehyde to succinate, a key step in the GABA shunt, which is an alternative pathway to the Krebs cycle. This enzyme is essential for the proper functioning of the nervous system, as it helps regulate the levels of GABA, the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. Disruptions in pALDH5A1 activity can lead to the accumulation of toxic metabolites and have been associated with neurodegenerative disorders and neurological dysfunction.
